Fran Lebowitz has successfully resided in three critical aspects of the most lucrative book publishing industry in the world, New York’s. Her first foray into the business was with a major commercial publisher, Macmillan, in their marketing division. Following that, she worked with the renowned William Morris Agency.
An opportunity opened up at a midsized boutique agency, Writers House, where Fran would spearhead a pop culture youth oriented division. It is here that she spent the next eleven years representing film studios and commercial bestselling and long running teen series bringing in contracts, royalties and motion picture/television deals totaling well over a million dollars per year. Rapid success in this lucrative paperback genre allowed her to do what she loved best - nurturing talented first time authors from idea to final deliverable manuscript. She successfully placed many, many first time authors who went on to sign multi book deals and become industry staples.
When an opportunity arose to have an adventure in a faraway land and the chance to try something new – namely spending more time with her two toddlers – Fran and her family moved to Singapore where her husband continued his work as a lawyer in the entertainment industry. She sadly said good bye to her clients but not to the industry. Instead, she took a seat on the other side and wrote ‘an unreliable memoir’ entitled Tales From A Broad which Bantam Australia published. This book was a bestseller for Borders and Woolworths and sold out in its first year. Thereafter, she freelanced with an Australian editorial agency before being approached to start her own agency.
“After wearing all of these hats, I can tell you what I love the best: It’s helping someone find their voice and reach their goals -- polishing off the diamond in the rough – that really makes me tick now.”
The story behind all of these stories makes Fran uniquely qualified to shed a rare and accurate light on the business of publishing and to encourage, mentor and mould talent into reality.
